Electricity Meter Running Backwards
Why an older meter may reverse after solar panels are installed, and what to do next.
A meter running backwards is not normal. The issue has historically affected some older analogue meters without a backstop when solar PV panels export electricity to the grid.
What should I do?
Contact your electricity supplier promptly and explain that the meter may no longer be measuring imported and exported electricity correctly. Your supplier can inspect the equipment and arrange a compatible replacement.
What happens to my bill?
The supplier may reconstruct usage using earlier readings and historic consumption. Keep dated photographs of the display, copies of bills and records of when the solar installation began.
If you cannot resolve the issue with your supplier, follow its formal complaints process and seek independent consumer-energy advice.
